Creating Trauma-Sensitive Safe Spaces

As a licensed social worker and public health professional, Gaya is committed to spreading awareness about how early experiences of trauma and adversity can impact present and future mental and physical health. Her therapeutic approach combines principals of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and other clinical interventions that help individuals gain a deeper understanding of their pasts, generate positive approaches to life, and learn to be present in the moment. She strives towards creating a space in therapy where individuals feel heard, valued, and safe.

Gaya has dedicated much of her career to creating trauma-informed environments within communities. For her public health capstone, she developed a training curriculum for high school educators in a low-income neighborhood in Philadelphia that provided them with psychoeducation on childhood trauma and tangible interventions to be used with students experiencing post-traumatic symptoms in the classroom. Additionally, she currently works at the NYC Mayor’s Office where she manages various initiatives that serve individuals with complex behavioral health needs in the criminal justice system.
