Gaya Kodiyalam

Gaya Kodiyalam LMSW

Gaya Kodiyalam is a licensed social worker and public health professional who is passionate about trauma-informed therapy and care. She attained her B.A in Psychology from Barnard College of Columbia University and her dual-degree Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health from the University of Pennsylvania. As part of her MSW field work, Gaya interned at various non-profits that served adults and children impacted by violence. Her first field placement was at Women Against Abuse, where she provided crisis counseling to women fleeing domestically abusive relationships. In this role, she conducted lethality assessments, helped create safety plans, coordinated emergency safe haven placements, and facilitated weekly group therapy sessions for children residing in a domestic violence safe haven. Her group therapy sessions utilized art as a mechanism for healing and focused on topics such as creating/maintaining healthy relationships, setting boundaries, and developing coping skills.

Gaya’s second field placement was at Joseph J. Peters Institute, where she used trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy to counsel child/adolescent survivors of sexual violence, provided body safety and assertiveness training to young children with sexually reactive disorders, and utilized cognitive behavioral therapy to counsel adults with complex trauma histories. Additionally, as part of her MPH thesis project, Gaya designed a trauma training curriculum for high school educators in a low-income neighborhood of Philadelphia that provided them with psycho-education on childhood trauma and tangible interventions to be used with students displaying post-traumatic symptoms in the classroom. The curriculum has been adapted into annual summer teacher trainings by the high school due to proven success in helping teachers develop new trauma-informed skills and increasing their confidence in responding to children reacting to trauma during class time.

After completing graduate school, Gaya spent the past year working as a Program Manager at the NYC Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. In this role, she managed various initiatives that serve individuals with complex behavioral health needs in the criminal justice system. She is excited about transitioning back into clinical work and looks forward to developing herself as a psychotherapist at R&A.
