Hanna Verhoeven

Hanna E. Verhoeven, Psy.D., is a clinical and school psychologist, who works from an integrative, collaborative framework.. She just completed her Doctor of Psychology degree in School and Clinical-Child Psychology from Pace University in May of 2020. Throughout her training, she has been engaged in clinical work with children, adolescents, adults, and families from diverse cultural and diagnostic backgrounds. She has worked with these populations across a variety of treatment settings, such as a New York City public hospital, outpatient community clinic, foster care agency, and public school system. Dr. Verhoeven approaches her clinical work with warmth, compassion, openness, and flexibility, aiming to create a safe, non-judgemental space for people to explore, heal, grow, and connect to their authentic selves.

Dr. Verhoeven grew up on a small family farm in the Catskill mountains of New York State. Growing up on a farm taught her many lessons about the importance of growth, health, adaptability, and resilience, which she carries with her into her clinical work. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the University of Rochester in 2013, sparking her interest in brain-behavior relationships and the mind-body connection. After a couple of years working as an administrative assistant and reflecting on potential career paths, she decided to pursue her long-time love of working with children, and desire to help others, by becoming a psychologist. While she originally planned to primarily work as a school psychologist, she quickly developed a passion for clinical work with people across the lifespan, which she is eager to continue to pursue.

Dr. Verhoeven recently finished her pre-doctoral internship training at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, N.Y. through the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She had the opportunity to work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, providing intensive individual, group, and family psychotherapy for children and adolescents with acute behavioral and social-emotional difficulties. She also worked in the psychiatric emergency room providing clinical risk assessments and crisis interventions for people of all ages. Additionally, Dr. Verhoeven continued to explore her interest in the mind-body connection through an integrated care program, providing psychotherapy to patients with chronic medical illnesses. During her internship year, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and she had the unexpected experience of providing supportive grief and bereavement counseling to community members who had lost loved ones to the illness.

Dr. Verhoeven’s prior clinical training experiences were largely centered on outpatient and school-based work with children and adolescents. During her externship at at JCCA, a foster care agency in the Bronx, N.Y., she discovered her passion for working with individuals who had suffered from attachment and relational traumas, which were often chronic and intergenerational in nature. While working in the public school system in Long Island, N.Y., Dr. Verhoeven learned valuable lessons about child development, particularly the impact of such societal structures and systems on child developmental and mental health. At Pace University’s community mental health clinic in Manhattan, N.Y., she expanded upon her clinical work with adults, providing longer term psychotherapy to adults with depression, anxiety, and trauma.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Verhoeven works from an integrative framework, pulling heavily from attachment, relational, and dynamic oriented frameworks while utilizing a strengths-based approach. She aims to meet each client where they are at, and work collaboratively with them to help them reach their individual treatment goals. Her primary goal is to form genuine connections with her clients, and for them to feel seen, heard, accepted, and respected within the therapeutic relationship. She believes that people are capable of healing, growth, and change, and feels honored to embark on a career that will allow her to play a role in that journey for others.
